Dominic van der Merwe hand finishing a Carrara marble sculpture in Pietrasanta, Italy.

Dominic van der Merwe

Melbourne based sculptor whose practice explores moments of transformation, creating forms that capture the quiet energy of continual change.

I came to sculpture through industrial design, where form served a purpose. Sculpture gave me the freedom to pursue form for its own sake.

I’m drawn to shapes that feel inevitable. Forms that seem discovered rather than invented. Work that holds movement and stillness in the same gesture.

My work begins through physical exploration before moving into digital translation and fabrication in stone, bronze and stainless steel. Each stage is a continuation of the making process, protecting the original gesture while allowing the work to evolve.

I work closely with collectors, architects and designers because context shapes the work.
